Skate (PS3)

Manufacturer's Description Skate is the closest thing to skateboarding without actually putting your feet on a board. With innovative controls that take advantage of the dual analog sticks, the power of the next-gen hardware, and the ability to sculpt tricks that define your own style, Skate delivers an authentic boarding mecca like no other videogame. Individual styles combined with physics-driven animations promise that no two tricks will ever be the same.

And there’s plenty of room to pull off those tricks - San Vanelona challenges you to explore, find, and own the best spots. You can even capture footage to create and show off your style with friends across the worldâ€"because without footage, it's fiction. Get ready for all the fun, creativity and culture of skateboarding without the hours of practice, broken bones, and hospital visits. Redefined., 25 Sep 2007 By L. Otto "iPod? Sure, I'll take two." (Surrey, England) - See all my reviews Fun: I could write this review for two groups of people; the Tony Hawks generation, or completely new players to the skateboarding franchise. Firstly, this game is completely different from any Tony Hawks game. The control method is no longer a button-bashing-combo-scoring medley, Skate has definitely taken things a step or two back down to reality. Skate is definitely the closest I have ever been to skating on a console. Coming from an ex-skater, this is a big feat! I like how physics has developed in games, and Skate has just about nailed the 'reality-engine'. The control system in Skate utilises dual analogue sticks (the left controls your body, and the right controls your board) this takes some getting used to, but after a while you ask yourself 'why hasn't it always been like this?' When talking about the 'reality' aspect of skating games, Tony Hawks has always been more of an entertainment package, with challenges such as grinding down a rollercoaster track faster than the speeding rollercoaster behind you, and elements like that. Skate doesn't have these things, instead the makers have decided to focus on a gameplay method closer to the real thing. In essence, your capabilities are limited to that of your imagination. You have an entire city at your disposale. What could a real-life skater do in a city? Try it in skate. If you're new to skating games on consoles, you don't need to play any Tony Hawks games, as they are pretty much old-hat now with the only thing changing between them being the graphics level. Skate is a new experience, it's pretty difficult as the learning curve is steep (steeper for those familiar to the Tony Hawks lineup) but once you nail a tight line on a spot you've just discovered, it makes it all worthwhile. In conclusion, Skate has redefined skating games. I think the people at Tony Hawks are scratching their heads at the moment (don't get me wrong, I like the Tony Hawks series) and wondering how they're going to improve now. This game is totally fun, addictive and I would recommend it to absolutely everyone regardless of what kind of game they play, I can just about guarantee they'll like Skate! Van Vuuren "The Ru" (London) - See all my reviews Fun: As someone who skated for over decade in the good old days of Hosoi, Hawk and Way, I have always felt the Tony Hawk series was a bit unrealistic and even though I connected with them as pure games, I never felt like they were true skateboarding games. All this changed with SKATE. As an ex-skater the controls atr very intuitive and an ollie actually works the same as it would if you were to do it in real life. I have heard that the game has a steep learning curve but if you are an ex-skater then it comes pretty naturally. Besides for being able to do all the usual box of tricks, SKATE even allows you to do some old school tricks such as board slides! How cool is that! The gravity engine is much more realistic and you can no longer do an ollie 900 to blunt to impossible to nose grind fakie. In addition, you now skate in a town full of parking lots, skate parks and empty pools, instead of levels full of silly cartoon-like challenges. This game goes beyond just being a game as it actually makes you feel like you are outside skating yourself!
