What I was really interested in was the high def blu-ray player. I guess there is still a little bit of confusion as to exactly what the difference is between the 60 and 40gb versions. Here they are: 1. 40gb version is not backwards compatible with PS2/PS1 games 2. 40gb version has only 2 USB slots on the front not 4 3. 40gb version has no built in card reader As far as I can tell everything else is fully intact i.e. the 40gb version has all the relveant connections (HDMI, component, optical out etc) In the box is the console and a controller plus the connecting cable for the controller plus a video out cable and the power cable - NOT a HDMI cable so if you want one order one. You can play wired or wirelessly with the controller but when it's wired it will charge the built the battery so will need to be connected from time to time. The unit is solid feeling but quite stylish with a lovely black polished finish. The buttons on the front respond to touch alone which I thought was very cool. I am obviously easily pleased! Anyone who has a PSP will be familiar with the menu system on the PS3 which is the same but has more options. Setup is easy and the console is ready to go in less than two minutes after the inital setup (language, time setting). Just going back to the differences between this and the 60gb model, I think the differences will only be noticeable for hardcore gamers. The 2 USB slots are more than adequate unless you habitually have lots of people playing on multiplayer games in which case yes the 4 slots will be of benefit if the controllers need charging. Apparently the PS3 can have standard usb port replicators plugged in and it can also work with card readers and any device that works on a PC as 'mass media storage'. The blu ray player is superb. This next gen home cinema stuff is simply awesome. I've only got the one blu-ray (The Prestige-check out my review) but I will definitely be buying blu ray exclusively from now on. Hooked up to a full HD TV these disc are simply amazing. However, the PS3 has another trick up its sleeve in the form of it's full 1080p upscaling for normal DVD's. This has got me going back through my DVD collection watching my old films because the upscaling makes them look almost as good as a genuine high def disc. There's some fancy processing going on here and it's very impressive. The console can also play back most music file formats and will rip straight to the hard drive so you can build your music library on the console. It has a really cool visual player which reacts to the music too. Just to give you a taste of how powerful the CPU is - I signed up to the folding at home project which processes work units for a project based on research into protein folding. Anyone familiar with seti@home will know hwat I'm on about. Anyway, one work unit on my PS3 takes around 8-9 hours and on my 3ghz PC which is still a 'reasonable' machine by most standards.....5 days and 4 hours. About the only thing I am marking down the console for is I just thought the hard disk side of things would have been faster. On downloading demos they have to be installed like on a pc and it's hardly quick...minor gripe. So a next gen full 1080p disc player and all round entertainment hub and games machine for less than 3 ton...it's a bit of a no-brainer. With the money I saved buying this 'cut-down' version I bought another game! I will try and post my game reviews soon separately. Highly recommended.

Blu Ray Ps3 News

"Blu-Ray videos don't like 720 native screens :(" (EuroGamer)

Got my first Blu-Ray movie today, only to discover how borked the PS3 is when it comes to movie playback. It turns out you can only output in 1080 or 480 resolutions, so if like me you have a 720p native screen you have to select 1080i then allow the TV to do the downscaling, yuck.
